SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer faces a dilemma that perhaps every finance chief wishes to have: obscene amounts of cash and nowhere to put it.

The iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac computer maker has accumulated a cash pile that totals nearly $46 billion, the biggest cash hoard among US tech companies and equivalent to one-fifth of Apple’s market capitalization.

And yet, due to an ultra-conservative investment strategy and low interest rates, that cash is earning next to nothing for Apple, which rarely makes acquisitions and does not pay a regular dividend or buy back stock.

“Oppenheimer probably has the most enviable CFO job on the planet,” joked Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin, who has been following Apple since the early 1980s.

Analysts say Apple’s near-death experience in the 1990s helps explain why it likes to remain liquid by investing in safe but low-yielding US Treasury and agency debt. The company earned a mere 0.76 per cent on its cash and investments in its most recent quarter, down from 1.43 per cent in fiscal 2009, 3.44 per cent in 2008 and 5.27 per cent in 2007.

Despite these low returns, Apple does not face much pressure these days to put its cash to better use. Any dissenting investors are probably appeased by the meteoric rise in the company’s share price, which has tripled since 2007.

“When a company is growing as fast as Apple, cash management is pretty far back in people’s thoughts,” said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves.

“But that’ll change at some point,” he added, estimating that Apple’s cash could hit a cool $65 billion by the end of fiscal 2011 if the company continued to generate free cash flow at the current pace. For now, Oppenheimer has a mantra that he repeats on every quarterly earnings conference call: He tells Wall Street that Apple’s investment priority is the “preservation of capital” with a focus on “short-dated, high-quality investments.”

Bajarin said Oppenheimer’s cautious approach dates from his time at Automatic Data Processing Inc, but Apple’s conservatism is also driven by Chief Executive Steve Jobs. Both Jobs, 55, and Oppenheimer, 47, subscribe to the Silicon Valley maxim that “only the paranoid survive,” he said.

They remember the dark days when Apple was struggling to stay alive and had to lay off thousands to cut costs. When Oppenheimer joined the company in 1996 as its controller for the Americas, a series of bad management decisions had eroded profits and sent its share price diving to less than $5. Things got so bad that one of the first things Jobs did when he returned to Apple was take a lifeline in the form of a $150 million investment from Microsoft Corp in 1997.

Facebook comes to Microsoft Outlook

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:xNHGXpEs5Dt2mM:http://sickfacebook.com/images/facebook_microsoft.jpg

WASHINGTON: Microsoft added Facebook to Outlook, giving users of its popular email program the ability to view status updates, pictures and wall posts from their friends on the social network.

Outlook now lets email users view the profile picture and activity of their Facebook friends in a box called the “People Pane.”

“You can view your social network as you look through your email to stay connected with your friends, family, and colleagues,” Paco Contreras Herrera, a group product manager for Microsoft Office, said in a blog post.

Microsoft integrated two other social networks, MySpace and LinkedIn, into Outlook in February using what it calls the “Outlook Social Connector.”

“The Outlook Social Connector doesn’t add another social network into the mix; rather it offers busy people the convenience of accessing them in Outlook,” Contreras Herrera said. “We expect more partners down the line,” he added.

Outlook 2003 and 2007 users can download the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center while Outlook 2010 users can get it through Microsoft Update.

Microsoft announces New Xbox 360 250GB

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

One day prior to the E3 Expo 2010, Microsoft announced the updated version of the Xbox 360 console. Simply called the Xbox 260 250GB, the new console features a number of changes, including smaller design, larger internal hard drive and Wi-Fi 802.11n support, amongst others.

For the new design, Microsoft has gone for a more angular look compared to the curvy design of the previous model. The new Xbox 360 250GB features a glossy all black design, which reminds us of the first generation PlayStation 3. It is now significantly smaller than the older version. Other aspects of the design are the presence of touch sensitive buttons instead of the mechanical buttons for the power and disc eject functions.

Microsoft has also gone for a single larger fan design instead of the two smaller fans for lower noise during gameplay. Those who witnessed the console first hand noted that the new model is significantly quieter than the older one. For those who don’t know, the older Xbox 360 was criticized for its higher noise levels during operation.

The new Xbox 360 250GB features a lot more connectivity options than before. You get five USB 2.0 ports, two of which are up front under the sliding panel and three are on the back. There is an AUX port for connecting accessories such as the Xbox 360 Kinect. An HDMI port is standard and so are the optical audio out and the proprietary AV connector found on the older consoles.

The new Xbox 360 250GB comes with a much smaller power brick compared to the older model. It is also much lighter than before and uses a new connector to connect to the console. Still, we would have preferred an internal power supply unit as on the PlayStation 3.

True to its name, the new Xbox 360 250GB comes with a 250GB HDD inside it. It is incompatible with the older hard drive though and it seems you cannot just use any laptop hard drive as you can on the PlayStation 3. You also cannot use older memory cards of the Xbox 260 with the new console. To transfer data from the old console to the new one, you can use a 16GB flash drive or the hard drive transfer cable (sold separately for $20).

The new Xbox 360 250GB has already gone on sale in U.S. and is available for $299 (Rs. 13,949 approx.). The older Xbox 360 is also on sale for $199 (Rs. 9,283 approx.) but may get an update. We hope the new console arrives in India soon.

Keyboard gets onto your nerves

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Easily something Steven Spielberg could have thought about. Keyboards are the new creepy crawlies. A team of 3 researchers working with Microsoft, Chris Harrison, Dan Morris and Desney Tan are studying a human touchscreen named Skinput.

Skinput: Keyboard gets onto your nerves

The touch screen will be projected with a laser on the hands and forearms that can be used as keyboards or remote controls. It would seem a very complex system but Skinput unites only 2 factors: the low frequencies of sound produced by finger touch on the skin and micro projectors that transmit the image. Skinput would offer the possibility of using the skin as a keyboard or controller for games and applications.Through a strip wound in the arm with a mini projector and a microphone shows a drop down menu on the skin or a digital keyboard.

“Devices with significant computational power and capabilities can now be easily carried on our bodies. However, their small size typically leads to limited interaction space (e.g., diminutive screens, buttons, and jog wheels) and consequently diminishes their usability and functionality. Since we cannot simply make buttons and screens larger without losing the primary benefit of small size, we consider alternative approaches that enhance interactions with small mobile systems,” claims Chris Harrison on his blog.

With Skinput you can control everything remotely without using any remote control, just as if the skin had a touch screen display. Then the microphone can understand where the touch of fingers is on the keyboard. All this is possible now and thanks to the ability of the microphone you know the sounds in the low frequency produced by the combination of skin, muscles and bones of the forearm.

Skinput: Keyboard gets onto your nerves

“One option is to opportunistically appropriate surface area from the environment for interactive purposes. For example, Scratch Input is technique that allows a small mobile device to turn tables on which it rests into a gestural finger input canvas. However, tables are not always present, and in a mobile context, users are unlikely to want to carry appropriated surfaces with them (at this point, one might as well just have a larger device). However, there is one surface that has been previous overlooked as an input canvas, and one that happens to always travel with us: our skin,” adds Harrison.

The image of a keyboard is projected from a laser on a body part and you will only have to wear a belt with micro transducer sensitive touch of fingers on the skin. New Scientist reported the testimony of the 20 volunteers who have tested and found it “innovative and simple” .The buttons and icons have been running without problems.

6 Troubles for Google

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

6 Troubles for GoogleYou thought Google Inc’s recent spat with the Chinese government must be one of the biggest concerns for the IT giant considering the mammoth sized Internet market in China? Not really! For the search giant has many more challenges to contend with: slowing growth, regulatory scrutiny, shift in ad spending and more.

Here’s looking into Google’s six troubles.

Facebook

FacebookWhile Mountain View, California-based Google has the biggest share of online search at home and in Western Europe, it has been leapfrogged by social network Facebook Inc as the most popular US Web site.

This month, Facebook surpassed Google as the most visited Web site in the US, accounting for more weekly visits than Google.com, according to research firm Hitwise.

Facebook’s gains at Google’s expense weren’t lost on Levi Strauss & Co. The closely held maker of blue jeans and Dockers pants is advertising on Facebook this year for the first time, while its budget for search, Google’s mainstay, is staying about the same as last year, said Megan O’Connor, director of digital marketing.

The same goes for advertisers like Starbucks and JetBlue Airways, which are eager to get their marketing messages in front of Facebook’s 400 million users.

No Search success

No Search successGoogle’s ventures in mobile, video and display ads have failed to match the success of search. To catch up in social media, Google added a social- networking feature called Buzz to its Gmail e-mail, letting users share photos, comments and clips from its YouTube site. The site drew criticism over privacy, prompting Google to scale back some of Buzz’s features.

“They need to show how they’re going to monetize things like Android, where they seem to be taking good mobile market share,” said Richard Parower, manager, Seligman Global Technology Fund. “How can they turn that into operating profits?”

Regulatory obstacles

Regulatory obstaclesLike Microsoft, Google faces regulatory obstacles to efforts to break into faster-growing markets. The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether the AdMob deal would squelch competition in the mobile ad market.

The US Justice Department also has raised antitrust concerns over a proposed $125 million legal settlement between Google and a group of publishers and authors. The agreement, if approved by a judge, would create the world’s largest digital library. In Europe, Google is under scrutiny for possible privacy, antitrust and intellectual property violations.

“Google has enjoyed an extended period of unfettered growth,” said Jonathan Zuck, president of the Association for Competitive Technology, a Washington trade group that represents technology companies. “Between Washington and Brussels, it’s clear that they’re now in a time where their explosive growth will be under greater scrutiny.”

Slowing sales growth

Slowing sales growthAs sales gains diminish, some investors are concerned that Google has begun to resemble Microsoft Corp, which generates billions of dollars in cash from its mature flagship business yet has struggled to conquer new markets. Google’s sales increased 9 percent last year after almost doubling in 2005.

At Google, sales growth has slowed in each of the past seven years, to 9 percent in 2009 from 409 percent in 2002. “They were the new kid on the block and everyone thought they were great,” said Daniel Morgan, a money manager at Synovus Financial in Atlanta, which oversees about $7.5 billion, including 27,720 Google shares, Bloomberg data shows. “That kind of euphoric, love-at-first-sight status has changed.”

Falling stocks

Falling stocksGoogle shares, which doubled last year, have dropped 8.6 percent in 2010, the sixth-biggest decline among the 75 technology stocks in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. The stock is 24 percent below its peak of more than $740 in 2007.

R&D spend

R&D spendGoogle has been piling up cash faster than it can find ways to spend it. Its cash and marketable securities surged 54 percent to $24.5 billion at the end of 2009 from a year earlier and made up 60 percent of total assets, up from 50 percent. Meanwhile, research and development costs rose only 1.8 percent to $2.8 billion.

This means Google is spending about 12 cents of every sales dollar on research and development, comparable with 15 cents for Microsoft.

Internet Explorer 9: 10 Things to knowIndiatimes Infotech

The software giant Microsoft is all set to update its IE browser. The Redmond-based company released a platform preview of Internet Explorer 9 for developers at MIX10 Web developer conference in Las Vegas.

Microsoft is betting on IE9’s speed and performance to expand its majority share in the browser market. The company claims that the new browser will be faster than Firefox 3.6. According to Microsoft, Web and application developers will want to upgrade to the next version of Internet Explorer for its optimized performance and HTML 5 support.

Here’s all about Internet Explorer 9’s very first release.

What’s new in IE9?

What's new in IE9?For now, Microsoft is betting on IE9’s speed and performance. The company claims that the new browser will be faster than Firefox 3.6. The company says Web and application developers will want to upgrade to the next version of Microsoft’s Web browser, IE9, for its optimized performance and better support for several standards: HTML5, DOM, and CSS3. IE9 is also the first browser to provide hardware-accelerated SVG support.

IE9’s new script engine, internally known as `Chakra’ compiles JavaScript in the background on a separate core of the CPU, parallel to IE. HTML5 will also allow IE9 to move beyond resource hogging browser plug-ins to display multimedia content online.

How IE9 looks?

How IE9 looks? It is too early to comment on IE9’s user interface. For, there is still no beta release. The platform preview is essentially a frame for showing off the new browser’s JavaScript and rendering engines. So, there’s no Back button, bookmark manager, history feature, toolbars, and other so-common features in a browser interface.

What exactly is IE9 Platform Preview?

What exactly is IE9 Platform Preview?Internet Explorer Platform Preview is not a full Web browser. It is intended to give developers an opportunity to test and provide feedback on the underlying platform for Internet Explorer 9.

To distinguish it from a full browser, the company calls it a Platform Preview. Microsoft plans to update the release every 8 weeks.

Can I use IE 9 release for my regular browsing?

Can I use IE 9 release for my regular browsing? No. As mentioned above, the Platform Preview is not a fully-functional browser. It opens links in a user’s default browser, not the Preview app. Since the Platform Preview cannot be registered as a default browser on a user’s system, the links do not open in it.

Also, some of the features may or may not be the part of the shipped version of IE9, depending on developers’ feedback through various stages of Platform Preview.

Does IE9 release replace my current Internet Explorer?

Does IE9 release replace my current Internet Explorer? No, it does not, though it does share some settings with your existing Internet Explorer installation. Platform Preview installs side-by-side with earlier versions of Internet Explorer and any other browser(s) on your computer.

Any cool feature in IE9 release?

How Google tablet may look likeIndiatimes Infotech and Agencies

Apple’s iPad may soon have competition. As iPad commanded the technology world’s attention, Google continued working quietly on tablet computer software that could run rivals to Apple’s latest creation.

Pictures of what a Google tablet might look like were featured at a Chromium developers web page this week along with talk of how touchscreen controls could work based on the Internet titan’s Chrome computer operating system.

Shots highlight UI

Shots highlight UIThe images were posted online two days before the January 27 event at which Apple unveiled an iPad tablet computer that will begin shipping worldwide in March.

The page is primarily comprises shots highlighting the user interface (UI) of a tablet PC. It includes such possibilities as, “keyboard interaction with the screen: anchored, split, attached to focus,” “contextual actions triggered via dwell,” and “zooming UI for multiple tabs.”

Touch interface

Touch interface“You may have seen our Chrome OS tablet concepts from last Monday; in the video, some floating hands interact with a touch surface,” Google Chrome lead designer Glen Murphy wrote in a personal blog post.

“We only used one hand image instead of showing the full range of gestures, but I did make a larger set.”

Gesture control capabilities

Gesture control capabilitiesGoogle made images and video of Google tablet gesture control capabilities available online for developers to consider.

The “concept user interface under development” could signal another front on which Google will battle with Apple, which uses its own custom software in the iPad, iPhone, iPod, and Macintosh computers.

Netbooks only?

Netbooks only?According to the Chromium form factors site, “While its primary focus is Netbooks, Chrome OS could eventually scale to a wide variety of devices. Each would have vastly different input methods, available screen space, and processing power.” Chromium is the name of the open-source developer project that underlies the branded Chrome product.

The website focused on Chrome OS software and did not indicate whether Google would make its own tablet or opt to let others tend to the hardware.

Target date

Target dateGoogle’s mobile Android software is built into iPhone competitors, including the Internet firm’s own Nexus One smartphone released in January.

The target date for Chrome OS hardware is Q4 2010.

Tablet, tablets… are buyers listening?

Tablet, tablets... are buyers listening?IT companies have been trying to make tablets for years, with little success. Apple hopes its design will change that with its iPad selling from $499 to $829.

Recently-held CES saw unveiling of a flurry of tablets from computing companies of all hues. While Microsoft tied up with HP to luanch a Tablet PC, others joining the tablet fray include Dell, Asus, MSI and Sony.

NEW SOFTWARE TO START PC IN 7 SEC

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

New Google Inc software will start up a computer as fast as a television can be turned on, the search company said as it showed off its Chrome operating system designed for PCs that do their work on the web.

Google gave the first public look at its Chrome four months after declaring its intention of developing the PCs main software, a move that puts it directly against Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc.

True to Google’s internet-pedigree, the Chrome OS resembles a Web browser more than it does a traditional computer operating system like Microsoft Windows, matching Google’s ambition to drive people to the Web – where they can see Google ads.

The software will initially be available by the holiday season of 2010 on netbooks that meet Google’s hardware specifications, such as using only memory chips to store data instead of slower hard drives.

Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management for Google’s Chrome OS, said computers running it will be able to start in less than seven seconds. “From the time you press boot you want it to be like a TV: You turn it on and you should be on the Web using your applications,” he said.

What happens to your inbox after you die?

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

WEB WORLD

Saving that parting email from your first love in your inbox? Well, chances are, after you pass away, your spouse and the entire family will know about the long-held secret.

This is because web email services like hotmail and Gmail do not let users specify what should happen to their massages when they die.

In fact, email services owned by internet giants like Google and Microsoft have a policy of keeping your data after you die and letting your next of kin or the executor of your estate access it. These services can hold tens of thousands of messages.

Accounts with Gmail can hold up to 7GB-or roughly 70,000 emails with a small to medium picture attached to each and they archive the messages you’ve written as well as received.

When it comes to deleting the data, Microsoft’s Hotmail will remove an account if it is inactive for 270 days, while Gmail leaves the responsibility to the next of kin.

Of the top three providers, only yahoo refuses to supply emails to anyone after the users has died. The user’s next of kin can ask for the account to be closed, but cannot gain access to it.

A yahoo spokesperson said the only exception to this rule would be if the users specified otherwise in their will.

Mean while, social-networking site Facebook has recently publicized a feature called memorialisation that lets the family of deceased users keep their profile page online as a virtual tribute.

MySpace, on the other hand, says it addresses the issue of family access to sensitive data on a “case by case basis”.
