SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer faces a dilemma that perhaps every finance chief wishes to have: obscene amounts of cash and nowhere to put it.

The iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac computer maker has accumulated a cash pile that totals nearly $46 billion, the biggest cash hoard among US tech companies and equivalent to one-fifth of Apple’s market capitalization.

And yet, due to an ultra-conservative investment strategy and low interest rates, that cash is earning next to nothing for Apple, which rarely makes acquisitions and does not pay a regular dividend or buy back stock.

“Oppenheimer probably has the most enviable CFO job on the planet,” joked Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin, who has been following Apple since the early 1980s.

Analysts say Apple’s near-death experience in the 1990s helps explain why it likes to remain liquid by investing in safe but low-yielding US Treasury and agency debt. The company earned a mere 0.76 per cent on its cash and investments in its most recent quarter, down from 1.43 per cent in fiscal 2009, 3.44 per cent in 2008 and 5.27 per cent in 2007.

Despite these low returns, Apple does not face much pressure these days to put its cash to better use. Any dissenting investors are probably appeased by the meteoric rise in the company’s share price, which has tripled since 2007.

“When a company is growing as fast as Apple, cash management is pretty far back in people’s thoughts,” said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves.

“But that’ll change at some point,” he added, estimating that Apple’s cash could hit a cool $65 billion by the end of fiscal 2011 if the company continued to generate free cash flow at the current pace. For now, Oppenheimer has a mantra that he repeats on every quarterly earnings conference call: He tells Wall Street that Apple’s investment priority is the “preservation of capital” with a focus on “short-dated, high-quality investments.”

Bajarin said Oppenheimer’s cautious approach dates from his time at Automatic Data Processing Inc, but Apple’s conservatism is also driven by Chief Executive Steve Jobs. Both Jobs, 55, and Oppenheimer, 47, subscribe to the Silicon Valley maxim that “only the paranoid survive,” he said.

They remember the dark days when Apple was struggling to stay alive and had to lay off thousands to cut costs. When Oppenheimer joined the company in 1996 as its controller for the Americas, a series of bad management decisions had eroded profits and sent its share price diving to less than $5. Things got so bad that one of the first things Jobs did when he returned to Apple was take a lifeline in the form of a $150 million investment from Microsoft Corp in 1997.

Hackers can hijack your iPad, iPhone!

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

http://theiphoneaddict.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/dimensions_ipad_iphone_ipod_tipb1-400x382.jpg

BOSTON: A newly discovered vulnerability in the software that runs Apple Inc’s iPad and iPhone could allow hackers to enslave the popular mobile devices, three security firms said.

The flaw affects Apple’s iOS, which also runs the iPod touch, and could allow hackers to take complete control of a vulnerable device, according to Symantec Corp as well as privately held Lookout and Vupen.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said the company was aware of the report and is investigating.

The vulnerability in Apple’s iOS is the latest in a series of security bugs identified in mobile devices over the past week.
Security experts at a hacking conference last week pointed out several vulnerabilities in Google Inc’s operating system for mobile phones and tablet PCs.

Mobile devices have become increasingly vulnerable to attack because the software that runs them has gotten far more complex over the past few year, giving the devices many of the same capabilities as personal computers.

“We shouldn’t be surprised to see security bugs happen in very complex software,” said Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer for mobile security firm Lookout.

Attackers would need to trick a user into visiting a website planted with a tainted PDF document before infecting an iPad tablet or iPhone smartphone.

Mahaffey said that he is not aware of any incidents in which criminals have exploited the bug to gain control of an Apple device, but said the electronics maker has yet to offer a remedy to protect against such attacks.

“Everybody — both good and bad — knows how it works,” he said.

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Clearing misconceptions about the “very cheap” 200 dollar iPhones selling in the US

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

Alright, I thought people already knew about this. But after coming across a few recently who had a very wrong idea about it, I thought it is time to set things straight. Many have a misconception that iPhones are being sold for a really cheap price of USD 200 (Approx. Rs. 9,137) in America — while they are sold almost “four times” as much here in India.

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

The iPhone, till date, is sold in the US exclusively via AT&T — one of the biggest GSM cell-phone operators there. AT&T does sell iPhones for 200 dollars, but many skip to read the fine line of the compulsory two-year contract. In this contract, one has to opt for a compulsory data plan (for use of 3G internet) priced at USD 30 (Rs. 1,370). This is over and above whatever rental plan you opt for. The minimum talk plan rental is 40 dollars (Rs. 1,827). So, every month an iPhone user in the US has to at least pay 70 dollars on phone bills. This goes on for the next two years. So, if you calculate, every contract-based iPhone user in the US pays at least USD 1680 as part of their phone bills. Now you know why AT&T can sell iPhones for 200 dollars, don’t you? That’s because they recover the phone’s actual cost (maybe more!) over the span of those two years.
AT&T last year apparently started selling contract-free iPhones as well. The 3GS was priced at USD 600 (Approx. Rs. 28,000) Mind you, these are contract-free — which means that subscribers are not tied to a two-year contract. But they aren’t SIM free — meaning they’re still locked to AT&T’s network.

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

iPhones in the United States ARE as expensive as they are in India, if not more. India has predominantly been an “Open Market” when it comes to cell-phones. Which means that, users pay the full price of the phone while buying, then use it with any SIM card of their choice. Thus, you see iPhones being sold at actual price — not subsidized like the US. But then why is the price higher by roughly Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 7,000 in India? Taxes and import duties, I suppose. The same way a Macbook costs USD 999 (Approx. Rs. 46,000) in the US, while it costs Rs. 56,900 here in India.

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

Let’s get back — the iPhone in India is sold by two operators; Vodafone and Airtel. So, if you’re using any other operator, you can’t use the iPhone with your service. The phones sold in India are carrier-locked, but contract-free. Which means, you at least don’t have to pay a comparatively expensive monthly fee like people do in the US.

If you go to the grey market to buy an iPhone, and the guy tells you that its “unlocked/cracked” or anything illegitimate like that, please refrain from buying. You’ll probably save around 5000 bucks, but you’ll get a phone which is illegally made to work with other SIM cards. So, if you happen to (accidentally, or out of curiosity) update the iPhone’s software, your phone will possibly stop functioning. You’ll have to go back to the seller to get it cracked again, for which he’ll mostly charge you money. Plus, whenever any new OS update arrives (like iPhone OS 4 in June), you may have to wait till a jailbroken version is available so you update it with that. Jailbreaking or unlocking your phone will also void your phone off its warranty.

Is it worth buying an unlocked iPhone from the US?

If you’re buying an iPhone, better cough up the extra thousands (you’re already spending so much) and get a proper one from India. But what if you’re not on either Airtel or Vodaone?
The iPhone is also sold officially unlocked in many countries. Yes sir…these iPhones are officially contract-free and can be used with any SIM card in the world. Here’s the list: Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Russia, Turkey, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, South Africa.

So, if you have any acquaintance flying to any of these countries, you could ask them to get either the iPhone. Or check if any store in India is selling an iPhone imported from any of these countries. But please do not buy an iPhone from the US and then try to make it work here. You’d might just repent it in the future.

Nokia sues Apple over iPad, iPhone

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

AP

PARIS: Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest maker of mobile phones, filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Apple Inc in its latest salvo over the iPhone and iPad.

The lawsuit, the fifth patent complaint between the two companies in the past year over smartphone technology, broadens the fight to include Apple’s iPad touch-screen computer tablet. Nokia’s filing in federal court in Madison, Wisconsin, helped push Apple shares down 4.2 percent in New York trading, their steepest drop since Jan. 22.

In the three years since the iPhone was introduced, Apple has seized Nokia’s position as the company that defines the high-end smartphone market. Nokia, which took mobile phones to the Internet more than 10 years ago with its keyboard-based Communicator, was slow to move to the touch screens featured on the bestselling iPhone and on the iPad, introduced this year.

“Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices,” said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia. “We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia’s innovation.”

The legal battle began in October, when Espoo, Finland- based Nokia filed a lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing 10 patents. It demanded royalties on the more than 51 million iPhones sold since Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, 55, introduced the device in 2007.

‘Nokia is serious’
The five patents in the newest complaint relate to enhanced speech and data transmission, and antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, Nokia said in a statement. The patents aren’t the same ones at issue in cases in a federal court in Delaware, and before the US International Trade Commission, according to Laurie Armstrong, a Nokia spokeswoman.

“This suit shows Nokia is serious,” said Tero Kuittinen, an analyst at Greenwich, Connecticut-based MKM Partners who advises investors to sell Nokia shares. “Even in the last suit, they brought out everything but the kitchen sink, covering user interface, power consumption, speaker, camera. This is one of the broadest clusters of patent litigation in the sector over the past 10 years.”

Nokia is believed to be planning a range of “jumbo smartphones and tablets,” which could compete with the iPad, he said.
